Preparing for Perfect Pet Travel
If you've had to travel with your pet before, you might remember that it's not always a pleasant experience. It's not that your pets are mean or misbehaving, but there aren't many animals who like to get cramped up in a cage while traveling - particularly dogs. If you don't keep them in a dog crate, though, it can lead to a lot of other problems. Preparing for perfect pet travel can go a long way in making the trip better for you and your pet.
Perfect Pet Travel Tips
- Transport - Making sure you have a large enough cage for your cat, dog, or other animal will help them have enough room to move around and be comfortable. Unless you're driving a semi-truck, you're only going to have so much room, so make sure you have room for the pet carrier after you've loaded all your suitcases and other gear.
- Food - You don't want to overfeed your pet, but you should make sure they've eaten and "went potty" before you get on the road. You'll still want to stop (see below), but getting that stuff out of the way before you leave can help make the first miles of the trip better.
- Exercise - If you're taking a long trip, making sure to stop frequently to let them out of the cage to stretch and walk around is a good idea. If you remember what you feel like after sitting and driving for an hour or more, imagine what it must be like for traveling pets in a cage.
Traveling with a pet can be frustrating, but it doesn't have to be. As long as you prepare beforehand and try to put yourself in the place of your animal to make sure they'll be comfortable on the trip, the less you'll have to fuss with them when you're actually on the road. Pet travel doesn't have to be stressful and can actually be enjoyable.
